Missouri ranked second in rate of black homicides in 2007

St. Louis -- Missouri ranked second in the nation for the rate of black homicides in 2007, a national nonprofit group said Tuesday.

The Washington, D.C.-based Violence Policy Center said Missouri's 235 black homicide victims during that year -- the last for which FBI data were available -- translated to a rate of 34.82 per 100,000 black residents.

The nonprofit center, which works to stop death and injury from firearms through research, advocacy and education, said it found handguns and other firearms were most often used in the homicides.

Missouri was second to Pennsylvania, which had a rate of 36.36 per 100,000. Indiana was No. 3 with a 30.89 rate, followed by Nevada and Wisconsin tied at 29.83.

Pointing out the painfully obvious something should be done about this.

2. Did the "Center" have any data on prior records of the perpetrators?
Most gun-related homicide is committed by repeat-offenders going after other repeat-offenders. There are laws against the thug possessing firearms, and they should be enforced and NOT used as a low-card chit to gain a plea bargain.

"Pointing out the painfully obvious something should be done about this."

Not sure what you mean, but clearly prohibition and ineffecive laws are not that "something."

3. Well I am thinking the "something" should be something that addresses poverty

and the other underlying causes of crime.

I also don't think of poor people in desperate situations as "thugs".

But that's just me, I guess.

4. Glad to hear from you, anyway. I quite agree...
that we need progressive policies which EFFECTIVELY treat poverty and the resultant violence.

I don't believe I called "poor people in desperate situations" thugs. Can you point to where I did?

Thugs are those people who rob, beat, rape, home invade and shoot others to get what they want. But that's just me, I guess.
