Last month a Missouri Budget sub-committee passed a bill cutting services for abused women and their children by 50%. My letter to the 29 member MO Budget Committee:
02/19/2010
Budget Committee,
I am very concerned that the state Budget Committee may approve dramatic cuts to services for abused women. Alison Malinowski Executive Director, Lafayette House recently stated the following: "I don't think we choose (to go) without heat in our homes - we don't make those kind of dramatic cuts on a personal level and that is really the equivalent of what they are proposing here."
I think the committee needs to consider the fact that abused women will not disappear if funding for their services are cut. They will be in our ER rooms and in the newspaper. Please consider fully the ramifications of this decision. There may be programs that can be cut that will not directly harm public safety.
Thank you for your consideration,
I received 3 responses agreeing with me and expressing opposition to the cuts from the following MO Reps:
Representative Rachel BringerDistrict 006 (Hannibal)
Democrat
Representative Rebecca McClanahanDistrict 002 (Kirksville)
Democrat
Representative Sara LampeDistrict 138 (Central Springfield)
Democrat
Minority Caucus Secretary
I received one form response expressing concern for the budget in general but not for the cuts:
Representative Rob SchaafDistrict 028 (North St. Joseph)
Republican
Anyone see a pattern?
