Democrat Tom Gallagher, a former casino executive, secured his party's nomination Tuesday in a closely watched battle for a congressional seat in Nevada.
Gallagher defeated a field of five other Democrats for the right to challenge freshman Rep. Jon Porter, R-Nev. Democrats are targeting Porter's seat as part of a national strategy to take back control of Congress next year.
"I'm very grateful for all the support we've received here in this district, both from the voters and the hundreds of volunteers that have stepped forward to help us," Gallagher said.
Gallagher had 69 percent of the vote with 190 of 525 precincts reporting.
