ELKO - Jack Carter, the son of former President Jimmy Carter, will be in Elko Saturday to meet with local Democrats and others as he begins an ”exploratory“ campaign to challenge U.S. Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., in next year's election.
”We are very excited about this great opportunity to have Jack Carter kick off his campaign in Nevada with a visit to Elko first,“ said Dorothy North, Elko County Democratic Central Committee chairwoman who met with Carter today in Las Vegas.
”Jack is a businessman in the Las Vegas area and is interested in meeting not only the Democrats in our area but in getting to know more about our great rural Nevada, its people and the economies that support us,“ she added.
Carter and his wife, Elizabeth, moved to Las Vegas in 2003 and operate an investment consulting firm, Carter Global.
”Elko is my first official exploratory campaign stop in Nevada,“ said Carter. ”I'm looking forward to meeting folks and letting them get to know me.
”I was raised in a rural community in Georgia that had a population of about 650 people so I know I will feel at home in rural Nevada.“
Carter said he made the decision to run for office in the days after Hurricane Katrina. He said he was ”offended by the federal government's response to the disaster and is more concerned now than ever with the way the country is headed.“
