The Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada said it has registered 500 to 700 immigrants to vote this year in an outreach program designed to give immigrants a stronger voice in issues that affect them, such as immigration and minimum wage.
"It's really important to have these people voting so when these are introduced we can mobilize against it," said Ireri Rivas, organizer of the voter registration effort for the alliance, also known as PLAN.

"I think it's a recognition that the Hispanic or Latino vote is a very strong force in this election and in the elections to come," said de la Cruz, who works as an assistant federal public defender in Reno.
"One of the things that the population recognizes is that in order to become full-fledged participants in the community they have to assert their voice and they have to assert their vote," he said.
