1. As of now, Reid looks pretty safe. |
|
All the big name Repub. politicians have turned down a chance to run against him. There may be an idological right-wing candidate; I honestly don't know, because this race has hardly received any press coverage yet. It's never good to be complacent, but so far Reid looks like he's OK. Hard to tell about the 3rd District House race, against Porter. Herrera plummeted so drastically in 2002 (with good reason it turns out, his scandal had legs) that some of that could carry over.
A casino executive--can't think of the name now; I can post it next time I come across it--has announced to challenge Porter as a Democrat. IMO he's a Johnny-come-lately to the Dems; gave money to * and other candidates less than a year ago, but maybe that was just covering all the bases for the casino industry. (And as a former Clark supporter probably I should give him the benefit of the doubt.)
Anyhow, this guy presumably has both dollars and connections, so he might have a chance. I hope. Will post more as I hear or read more.

4. I am still a Clark supporter |
|
Shimmergal I went to the State convention and listen to Tom Gallagher speak, he is running against Porter and he sounds very good, this is not the former casino guy. I also went "underground" to a Republican womens meeting and listened to Mr. Rizor speak, it looks like he will be the repuke nominee and they are actively pursuing new voters, they have said that Reid only won by a handfull of votes last time and the RNC has promised to help him big time. Here in Douglas county we are working hard already to get out the vote. Looking forward to hearing what else you have to post.

He's a looser many times round.
Reid is pretty safe. Big warchest this time around.
Never take anything for granted.
porter the prick is probably going to skate to another term thanks to another sacrificial lamb who entered late plus NO advertising.
It stinks. It's MY district.

3. Reid may have a semi-tough fight |
|
Reid's Republican challenger (whose name currently escapes me) has been running an ad blitz on Howard Stern's show (very popular here in Vegas) which is replete with all the typical right-wing garbage (i.e. "failure to support the troops," "weak on defense," etc.). While the charges are demonstrably untrue, it seems as though Republicans can bandy around almost any blatant lies they want, and the public - at least to this point - seems to eat 'em up like candy.
Since Nevada kinda leans Republican anyway, I'm concerned that Reid's challenger's message (again, I forget his name; sorry for the poor grammar) may resonate simply cuz people hear what they wanna hear from who they wanna hear it from. I hope I'm wrong.
The interesting dynamic, though, is that a lot of Las Vegans that I talk to - and I talk to a lot of Republicans unfortunately - seem to support Reid not only for his moderate posture, but also due to the seniority he's accumulated. What I've heard from Repubs is that throwing away Reid's seniority during the ongoing fight (although pretty much dead at this point) with Yucca Mountain would be foolish, so hopefully that feeling will win out over any notion of switching a D for an R.
Jon Porter's re-election may be interesting provided that his challenger can amass enough funding for the fight. From what I've gathered, Porter's not exactly that popular even amongst his Republican constituency, so a well-funded, moderate Democrat may be able to successfully challenge him for the seat. Make no mistake, though, the effort will require a huge amount of money, seeing as how Porter is quite adept at fundraising.
I haven't seen any polls regarding either of these candidates. All of my information is purely anecdotal, so I'd love to see any polls if anyone can point me in the right direction ...

5. Reids challenger's name is Rizor |
|
and he is a smuck, I heard him talk and he has said that the draft was inevitable and that Yucca was done deal. He spoke at a Repuke womens luncheon that I went to (undercover) for the Douglas County Democratic Womens group.
