What is wrong with NH?

I have been working at a NH software company for two months, and am horrified by some of the political ignorance that I have encountered. Seemingly benign people are Fox News Loving Bushbots. Based on this small subsection of the NH population, I don't have much hope for the Dems in this state.

One of my colleagues has a list of 'un-truisms' in Fahrenheit 9/11 hanging on his cube. He hasn't seen the movie. The other one has an unflattering pic of John Kerry on the outside of his cube. I have an F9/11 screen saver.

Thankfully, I am close to getting another (better paying) job, and will be working from home. It is not even worth it to challenge these people to think-I kid you not. They are unable to think critically when it comes to politics and believe everything they hear.

What do you New Hampsterites think of Kerry's chances? I just heard on NECN that NH has the largest percentage of soldiers called up to go to Iraq.

These are scared people who, on faith, believe that Bush will somehow protect them from the hordes of Islamic brown people as well as the hordes of angry, welfare-loving, drug taking, affirmative action black people in America.

2. Sounds like the southern part of the state

which was largely colonised by Boston tax whiners looking for a free ride elsewhere. They don't think because they haven't had to, not for years, and it suits them. They're ignorant because the prefer having their opinions handed to them instead of forming them by themselves. They also exist in every part of the country, just not usually in so high a concentration.

The rest of the state might surprise you in November.

4. Some are from MA border towns, but there's a lot of natives there

unbelievable racist/homophobic attitudes, among other examples of ignorance. I'm just not used to it, I guess, being from Cambridge. :shrug:

5. We Will Win N.H.

They are fighting a losing cause. Kerry will win this election.

The swing voters will take a chance on someone new just because of the present divisions in this country. No one, not even Bush supporters, want to go through four more years like this.

Do you notice that the Chimp's supporters never can make a case for his successes, because there are none. It's always someone else's fault. 9/11 was Clinton. The country was already in a recession before he got in. The war is going badly, but Viet-Nam was worse. The French and Germans let us down. The U.N. caused the war because of corruption in oil for food program. Gas prices are high be because Congress won't pass his phony energy bill (put aside that both branches are controlled by the Repukes).

On and on it goes. Failure after failure. Excuse after excuse. Just challenge them on facts. They can't withstand that.

6. Interesting

NH has always been depicted as a state with a tremendous amount of distrust of national government -- A State that believes in small government. I have always been told by my friends from the northeast that NHers just want to be left alone and want an unintrusive gov't. I find it fascinating that they embrace the President of the most intrusive government in our history.

7. NH belongs somewhere between Mississippi and Alabama

they have very little in the way of social support services, and some of the most abject poverty in rural areas that I have seen.

and we're proud of it, Rose!! We provide a level of services that would make a third world country blush - but we don't have no steenkin income tax!!

I read an essay on the elections in 2000, that read in part, "NH marches bravely into the 20th century.." My coffee went out my nose, it's so true.

Since you are here, Travis, can you tell us why you failed to show up to give your speech at the Democratic State Convention in Manchester last month?

Can you tell us why you say that the other candidates are anti-gay, when this is not the case?

12. Here's a better way

Rather than complain, help us change the situation:

Knock on doors with the Kerry campaign or ACT;

Volunteer for a candidate like Bob Bruce, Paul McEachern, John Lynch, or Deb Pignatelli;

Get involved with a local Dem group, whether it is your local committee or one of the DFA meet-up groups;

Donate money to one of the groups trying to win Dem seats in the NH legislature, such as the Committee to Elect House Democrats (Rep. Marjorie Smith), New Democratic Majority (Rep. Peter Sullivan), Citizens for New Solutions (Councilor Steve Marchand) or the Senate Democratic Caucus (Sen. Sylvia Larsen).

with the NH Citizens Alliance - doing a voter registration campaign. NHCA is a nonprofit working on social justice issues, statewide, with an emphasis on health care. They're also doing voter education and candidate training.

Lynch might win the primary, but he doesn't deserve the nomination. What is his education funding plan? A bowl of tepid mush that is remarkably similar to Benson's! That ain't leadership, Shoeempress.

I'm voting for a candidate with a workable funding plan and the guts to stand up to the Union leader's editorial writers. I'm voting for Paul McEachern.

Lynch will win the primary - but I'm voting for McEachern, too. I voted proudly for him in 1988. NH has a revenue problem - plain and simple. McEachern at least is willing to say it out loud. There are Republican legislators saying it out loud fa crying out loud. This is a good time to start working on tax reform - we're going to be $300 million in the hole - and Lynch already has taken the stupid pledge?

How long will we continue to allow William Loeb to dictate our tax policy from the grave? How is it a win for us, if Lynch follows Republican dictated dogma?
