Senator Gregg-- An Embarrassment of Riches |
|
An Embarrassment of Riches by Mike Liddell Fri Oct 21st, 2005 at 10:39:36 AM EST
Republican Senator Judd Gregg hit the jackpot yesterday winning $853,492 in the latest Powerball lottery drawing. Gregg, a wealthy lawyer "who lists between $2.5 million and $9 million in assets on his financial disclosure form," has decided to do what any good Republican would do with the money - keep it for himself and his foundation.
The Washington Post reports:
Gregg, 58, said he would give a portion of his winnings to the Hugh Gregg Foundation -- named for his father...
Will he keep any for himself?
"Oh yes," he said. "The majority I will use personally."
And the Concord Monitor puts the icing on the cake:
found time to vote against a bill that would have helped poor families pay their home heating costs this winter. (Gregg was the only New England senator to vote against the proposal.)
A day earlier, Gregg voted against raising the minimum wage by $1.10, to $6.25 an hour. That wage hasn't increased since 1997.
<...>
Asked if he'd send any money to hurricane relief efforts along the Gulf Coast, Gregg said, "Well, I've already contributed, Kathy and I, to the Katrina flood fund."
Oh, and by the way, in 1992 then-Gov. Gregg opposed a proposal to allow riverboat gambling “as contrary to the state's family tourist image.”
If this isn't a perfect example of Republican hypocrisy and twisted GOP priorities, I don't know what is.
