My back yard now has water almost up to my knees. This didn't happen last summer (for some reason), but the water has made its way into my yard a couple of times this summer.
I'm living about as urban as one can in ABQ; I bought my house because I wanted to live around a couple of friends who are almost family. So my back yard, which is shaped like a bowl, flooded one or two time previously this summer, but man, you should see it now!
I was so concerned that I called the Rio Grande Water Conservancy. I didn't want the water to keep coming at such a rate.
I just have to learn how to manage my irrigation system and privileges I guess. A guy from the conservancy is supposed to contact me. The dogs love romping in it (and waiting for birds). But I need to find out how to regulate the water flow.
Anyway, I feel like a real New Mexican now--or I will, as soon as I can figure out how to manage my irrigation. ;-)

1. Now that you are a real New Mexican . . . |

you need to call ditches by their New Mexican name, acequias. I'm surrounded by them, but I don't have a way to get the water from the acequia behind my house to my yard. This is something I need to look into since my husband is watering way too much for this desert woman.
