Hi. Need help. Wife and I are coming to NYC this weekend.... |
|
We have been to NYC several times, but this is the first time we are staying and spending time on the upper west side (near 72nd and Broadway). Can anyone recommend some good breakfast spots or other establishments we should visit?
Thanks!

1. I might be off a block or so with some of the addresses but here goes.. |
|
For breakfast I recommend: H & H Bagels (80th & broadway) - Best bagels, hands down Any of the diners on Broadway in the 70s, 80s (Manhattan Diner, New Wave Cafe, 82nd st cafe, Viand)
Also check out: Beard Papa's, 76th & bway - Japanese cream puffs, high quality stuff Ali Baba, 85th & columbus - Middle eastern cuisine, a bit pricey but free unlimited salad bar, and the best shawarma I've had.
Semi-fancy places for dinner: Niko's, 76th & bway Citrus, 75th & amsterdam
I do not recommend: Good Enough to Eat , 84th & Amsterdam (?) - Talk about false advertising (with a name like that)

And TVs that show nothing but Three Stooges movies (unfortunately the later ones with Curly Joe DeRita).

4. Alice's Tea Cup at 73rd between Columbus & Amsterdam |
|
(just off Columbus - I think it's 73rd, might be 74th) Great Tea, Scones and even full brunches - it gets crowded on the weekends so go early or be prepared to wait.

7. Feeding, no problem. But.... |
|
stay tuned to the headlines: If negotiations continue to go badly, NYC may have our first transit strike in 25 years, beginning midnight tonight. Things might get a little crazy: be ready for odd rules (especially if you are driving here...S of 96th street a no-go without 4 people in car, etc...)
Regardless: have a GREAT visit, and IM or e-mail us if you need any assistance or advice....

8. Yes...we've been keeping an eye on the situation... |
|
We normally like to hit the Village, Chinatown, Chelsea, etc...but we just stick around the upper west side if the strike goes through. Either way, we'll just be happy to be in NYC. :-)

12. Well, if you're coming this weekend |
|
I would suggest eating wherever you can. If the MTA strikes, workers will not be able to come in from Brooklyn, Washington Heights, and the Bronx to prepare and serve your food. Cabs will be difficult to find. At least you'll be in NYC during a historic period!

14. We had a great trip and took advantage of some of the recommendations... |
|
We ate at Niko's which was excellent and also grabbed some bagels from H&H. We tried Alice's tea cup, but it was too crowed. Also spent quite a bit of time in Chelsea and SoHo.
I do have one question for the locals here. Why do people have such a hard time cleaning up their dog's shit? It is everywhere!

Barney's Greengrass! Or Good Enough To Eat! They are both awesome! :) (I like Sarabeth's as well, but it's a Lady's Who Lunch kinda place.)
