The field in the 20th Congressional District race is growing larger. Edwin Pell of Dutchess County said Sunday he is running as an anti-war Democrat for the seat held by Rep. John Sweeney, R-Clifton Park.
Unlike fellow Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand, of Hudson, Pell is calling for the immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq. He is also calling for troops to be withdrawn from Afghanistan.
"I’m running as a pro-peace candidate," Pell said from his Rhinebeck home.
Troops stationed in Germany, Korea, Japan and anywhere else outside the continental U.S., should also be brought home, said Pell, a member of the Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers. Quakers typically oppose violence or war as a means of settling conflicts.
