Advise for those who are coming to NYC for the protest |
|
First and foremost the city will be overflowing with protesters or people who are sympathetic to our cause. Don't be worried too much about wearing an anti-Bush shirt. I think anyone supporting the Chimp would be more in danger because Bush is extremely unpopular in both the city and the entire state.
Second - unlike DC protests - NYC protests will NOT allow signs that are attached to any form of solid stick. So if your sign is made with 2x4, pole, broom handle or anything else that could feasibly be used as a weapon - just get rid of it now because the cops will make you toss it if you use it. The only thing allowed for "poles" for your sign are those cardboard tubes similiar to what you find in tubes of giftwrapping. This is one of the reasons why I didn't ask Skinner for the DU Banner - it's on a metal pole and would not be allowed.
Third - finding DUers:
We will be as close to the corner of 22nd & Broadway - somewhere on the East Side of Broadway nearing the corner of 22nd. I will be making a homemad white cardboard sign that will say Democratic Underground and you really can't miss me. I'm a tall blonde and I'll be wearing my lavendar Pro-Choice Delaware tee-shirt with blue sweatpants. In case it's cold I'll have my grey Eagles hoodie with me.
You are welcomed to PM and ask me for my cell phone number HOWEVER, if I see that you have a low post count I will not give you my cell phone. I'm sorry about that but I don't want to risk being Malkinized. If for some reason our group gets pushed down further south on broadway in the staging area, I'll try to stay behind for strays but at 12noon I'll be gathering up with the group.
Please plan smart - bring a small backpack or carry-bag and pack your own water & maybe a few snackbars. Yes, food will be available throughout the route with the various stores along the way, but it can be costly. I just find it easier to carry my own. Restrooms are usually the few restaurants along the way were they might provide you facilities if you buy something.
Copes in NYC can be a bit more agressive but normally if you're not out there trying to start a fight and force getting arrested, you should be fine. My rule of thumb is if you don't want to be arrest or involved in any violence then when you see any - get as far away as possible.
Any questions - feel free to PM me. This is like my 6th NYC protest and I was there for the one they had right before the war started (and was stuck near where the cops went ballistic) and the RNC convention protest.
You'll be fine - the good thing is overall in NYC - they can't stand Bush

UFPJ only wants those who have signed up to be part of a contingent to enter the march from the east side of Broadway. They want everyone else to enter from the west side. I'm sure this will work, in theory. ;)
I'm making a couple of "PEACE TAKES COURAGE" signs (inspired by Ava; if a 15 yo can stand up to thugs, so can I), so hopefully, both of us will be able to corral DUers together.

2. I was going to get some stuff for signs once in NYC |
|
There is a Duane Reade right around the corner that'll probably have the supplies we need to make a couple of signs.

3. I snagged some glass paint at Target today |
|
it says it's good for posters & banners, so I've already run up a "PEACE TAKES COURAGE." I'll do a couple more tonight as well. Downside, they only had red, white, & blue. :( So, unless you want another color, I've got the "markers."

6. I'll be happy to buy some more when we're in NYC |
|
I'm taking the train in and want to keep my load light (especially with some booze I'm bringing along for after parties).
Anything you need - just ask :D
