"Freedom Tower" setting my teeth on edge. Anyone else? |
|
Now that things are moving to rebuild on the WTC site, "Freedom Tower" is being referred to all over the media.
It will always be the WTC site to this New Yorker. Bush et al. have so perverted the word "freedom" it sounds like an insult every time I hear "Freedom Tower." Who came up with that name, anyway?

A couple of years after the first WTC bombing, I interviewed in one of the buildings ... when I saw they were inspecting bags to get to the elevators, I knew i didn't want the job that badly.

Same here, and I think that it rings true for all New Yorkers.
I hope we never forget.

3. I think it grates because |
|
of the whole stupid "freedom fries" thing. The people who think up these names think "freedom" is having the choice of coke or pepsi.
It has become a babbling sound - like any word repeated endlessly.

4. Worse yet - it's become an ironic joke |
|
NYers now accept random bag searches on the subway ... some actually welcome it. In short, the terrorists have won - we have surrendered our liberties.

7. And I feel it's wrong because |
|
'Freedom Tower' is a made-up name used by this administration to keep the memory of those damn 'YELLOW-ORANGE-RED' (scare tactics) alerts first in our thoughts.
I'm not sure I'm explaining it right, but I think you'll understand what I mean.
It's the Wortld Trade Center......Period.

9. WTC? Another bogus name |
|
I remember when the monstrosities were erected - they were the Twin Towers then and will always be to me. It was never a world trade center - the state had to fill the vacant floors by contractual obligation ... then you had the financial interests, like the many state and municipal bond traders who lost their lives on 9/11.

And redesign the building. I would like to see something around the same height as the old towers, either an office buildng or a tv tower-like structure. However, the name smacks of psuedo-jingoistic bullshit. BTW, Pataki coined that name.

11. James "Peak Oil" Kunstler called it "Eyesore of the Month" July 2005 |

www.kunstler.com (then click on Architecture/Eyesore of the Month on your right, keep clicking on Previous Month until you reach July 2005)
(snip) "The vulgar, grandiose, pretentious, and stupid revised "Freedom Tower" proposed for the former World Trade Center site represents the antithesis of freedom. Instead of a ground floor that offers connection to the pedestrian life of the street, what you get is a gigantic blank-walled crypto-military fortification -- two hundred feet of steel and concrete bombproof bombast -- while the priapic tower above holds office workers hostage in the world's number one target for shoulder-launched missiles and other weapons of opportunity. What kind of sadist corporate CEO would ask his-or-her employees to work in the 49th floor of this monstrosity? What sort of desperate, cringing, soulless employee would consent to work there? What makes any of the idiots associated with this project. . .think that we will even be able to run mega-structures like this one in an imminent future of worldwide energy shortages? The project should sink from the sheer weight of stupidity that has been heaped into it. It lacks the dignity of even a common bowling trophy. It's a disgrace to the city of New York and to the word freedom." (snip)

At this point I would prefer it be left as open green space. That would be the most fitting memorial to those who perished.

21. I will refuse to refer to it as that |

Just as I will not call National Airport "Reagan".....
What really bothers me about it is that on 9/11 our freedom wasn't attacked in anything like the way it has been since with all the domestic spying, implementation of the P.A.T.R.I.O.T. act, brainwashing people to take off their shoes and give up their privacy rights at airports, etc..... I would prefer to see the new building names the Tolerance Tower or even something reflecting the notion of liberty that this country was founded on.....

The chimp in chief has already dared extreme opponents of his foreign policy to knock them down, i.e. "Bring it on." They might be lovelier once completed, but they are already begging to be brought down by the continued arrogance of the * administration.

even though I'm living in exile in NJ, my heart is in NYC.
I'll no more call that building the "Freedom Tower" than I'll refer to 6th Avenue as "Avenue of the Americas" -- only marketing types, politicians, newscritters and tourists ever call it that, and that moniker was hung on poor 6th Avenue over 60 years ago.

|
At least the enw yankee Stadium will be called Yankee Stadiun (though it will never be the same). The new Shea will proably be "Commerce Bank" Ballpark or some such horse shit.
As for the "Freedom" Tower, it's right up there with Newark "Liberty" airport!
