New York GOP chairman Stephen Minarik yesterday called on Weld to step aside to avoid a “divisive” Republican primary with conservative lobbyist John Faso. Minarik said a battle between Weld and Faso would be a “costly exercise” that would drain both candidates’ accounts and put either at a disadvantage against Democratic former New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer.
“By ending his candidacy and supporting John Faso, Bill Weld will go a long way toward unifying our party, and helping us reach our shared goal of defeating Eliot Spitzer,” Minarik said in a statement.
Weld spokesman Rob Gray said the former Massachusetts governor would likely make a decision today.
