...neither is Spitzer vs. whatever no-name Republican who is challenging him.
The issue is limited resources and the fact that most NY races are completely decided from the get go. Giving money to Hilary, Spitzer, Suozzi, Tasini and most House candidates (including mine, Nadler) is a WASTE OF MONEY. The winner is going to win. Don't be stupid...
In 2004, after Barack Obama spoke at the Democratic Convention, millions of dollars in donations poured into his campaign. He got this money despite the fact that he had NO CREDIBLE OPPONENT and was THIRTY POINTS AHEAD in the polls. Once Election Night came and went, we saw how crucial those dollars could have been...in the Presidential race in Ohio, in Senate campaigns in Florida, Louisiana, South Dakota, Alaska, and Kentucky and in scores of House races across the country. Giving money to Barack in 2004 was the height of ignorant politics.
In 2006, Hillary and Elliot are the new Barack. You might as well save the dollars and burn them in the fireplace come winter...at least they'll keep you warm. Same with their challengers. If you REALLY want to make a difference this cycle, give your money to help win seats in the Senate or House. Claire McCaskill, Democratic Senate candidate in Missouri, is in a CLOSE race to defeat a Repub incumbent and could really use your support. The same for Dem House challengers in Connecticut, Arizona, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Iowa, Vermont, Minnesota and (YES) even upstate New York. If you're determined to keep your dollars in NY, look at the close NY Senate races. State Senate may not be sexy, but you could make a huge impact in taking back our state.
I'm so tired of us wasting resources. Time to get smart about it. If you want to discuss further, feel free to email me.
