Dear friends,
I am writing to share with you some exciting news. After much thought and reflection, I have decided run for New York City Comptroller in 2009.
Six years ago, when I set out to run for the City Council, my goal was to bring a new and distinctive approach to City politics. Together with many of you, I aimed to forge an approach that elevates the common good over special interests, promotes innovation over bureaucracy, and values pragmatic results over partisan rhetoric.
I am proud to say that we have had great success.
We have put the first clean-fuel taxicabs on City streets, created affordable housing through smart zoning, and used targeted tax credits to bring more jobs to New York. These accomplishments have led national commentators like Tom Friedman of the New York Times and the Democratic Leadership Council in Washington to showcase my work as a model for local officials across the country.
I set out now to bring our distinctive approach to the highest levels of City government.
As New York City’s Comptroller, I will be a citywide leader with a strong platform for progressive and effective City government. I will be an aggressive fiscal watchdog, working to make sure we get every penny’s worth of value from our City agencies. I will push to attract more investment to New York, to reduce the City’s massive debt burden, and to confront long-term environmental challenges. And I will measure my success – just as I have done in the Council – not by headlines or votes, but by concrete results.
I hope you will support me in this important campaign.
