question about marriage law in ny state

Now I believe there is no explicit definition of marriage or prohibition of new york marriage, under state law. Can anyone verify this? The reason is I want to respond to some bozo who is claiming in an LTE that Paterson violated the "legally established definition of marriage that our state has held since its inception."
