Does it annoy you when people refer to NC and SC as just Carolina?

I have family from Wisconsin coming to visit. While talking to them they told me they were coming to Carolina. It kinda annoyed me.

Ask them how their friends/relatives are doing in 'Dakota'. They'll get the message. ;-)

There's an update, though. More often now, I hear "the Carolinas," we're separate but still interchangeable. :eyes:

2. One assumes it is North Carolina

South Carolina is so different that most people think of North when they hear Carolina. South is like another world...at the state line near me on highway 107 the pavement turns terrible right at the state line and gets worse from there. Nothing but fireworks and peaches and rednecks; think I'll stay up here....Oh, they do have some good fishing down there.

I mostly hear "The Carolinas" used when talking about the Charlotte to GSP area or when referring to our adjoining coastal regions and beach resorts.

As a UNC alumnus, the word "Carolina" will always mean the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

However, I understand that historically, "Carolina" was one region, before becoming two separate states. Both North and South Carolina are wonderful places with a lot to recommend them, rich in history and tradition, and wonderful places to live in and to visit.

I live in the Charlotte area, so it might as well be Carolina.

i always say i live in North Carolina. but together they are the carolinas, right? probably similar in terms of beauty. maybe a tad more progressive up here? i'm still a newcomer. when i looked at your post i suddently recalled a tune from james taylor, in my mind i'm going to carolina. then of course there's the old standard nothing could be finer than to be in carolina in the morning. don't let it bug you, life's too short.

9. Doesn't bother me in the least. When someone says

Carolina in 49 of the 50 states that always means "North" Carolina. I'm sure you can guess what the only state is that this wouldn't be the case. The same one that thinks USC means University of South Carolina and not the University of Southern California. Wrong twice hehe

Whenever I hear of a school referred to as "Carolina" I think of that little pre-college that we refer to as Duke lite.

10. I'm bi-Carolinian.

I was born in South Carolina, grew up (mostly) in North Carolina, moved back to South Carolina for high school and college (graduated from the REAL Carolina), and then moved back to North Carolina shortly after college and have remained here since. For some reason, even though I have strong ties to both states, I'm bothered when people refer to them as if they are one.

But, I don't think I've ever heard anyone actually refer to the area as Carolina, singular. I've heard "the Carolinas" of course. That named is used mostly for referring to a region, as in "Hurricane Mo is headed for the Carolinas." Hmmm... I've also heard reference to "the Dakotas" but strangely no one ever seems to refer to "the Virginias," do they? LOL. And of course, as a graduate of NC State, the word Carolina conjures up the image of what we used to call "Orange County Junior College" :-)
