Passing through NC on my way to Savannah, GA. Sleeping in Fayetteville. Barbecue recommendations!

North Carolina is famous for its barbecue. In NYC, we have Brother Jimmy's bar which is good, but the real deal is probably better. Since I will be in Fayetteville on Sunday night, I would like to take advantage and try some really good pulled pork! What is the best suggestion that NC DUers have for me?

3. He'll be fifty miles from Smithfield

Smithfield is Exit 95, Selma is Exit 97. Smithfield and Selma kinda run together. Fayetteville is Exits 54 to 40.

Drive, stop, have lunch or dinner, drive to lodging in Fayetteville. And if he timed it right, he could even pop on in to the Ava Gardner Museum, if interested:

5. Well, the problem is the Smithfield of pork fame is in Virginia

The one in NC is more a wide spot in the road.

(On edit: I do, however, recommend stopping at JR's in Selma and getting a Johnston County Ham. Unlike a Virginia ham, a Smithfield, NC, ham isn't 18 pounds of pure salt.)

6. I wasn't *pushing* Smithfield, NC because of pork fame (or lack thereof)...

I suggested it because it was on the way and I figured he might find a highly recommended place via the Google. Or another DUer would chime in. I'm not at all familiar with Fayetteville, and picture mostly mediocre chain restaurants. (After all this, I hope to hear where he ended up...)

Flashing back to a Smithfield ham/oyster pie I had years ago in Williamsburg... phew, yeah, the salt. But it was de-lish.

2. I think you've really only got one choice for pulled pork in Fayetteville on Sunday

You're coming down 95 and staying at one of the hotels off the Cedar Creek Road exit, I am going to assume. What you are going to have to do, once you're settled into your room, is to get back on the Interstate and drive to Exit 41, which will put you in Hope Mills. Turn right when you get to the top of the off-ramp, and drive all the way through Hope Mills until you get to the area where Walmart, Auto Zone and a bunch of fast food joints are. Turn into the strip mall parking lot at the Taco Bell, go up until you can turn right, and do so. You'll be looking straight at Smithfield's BBQ and Chicken. There you can get quality pulled pork until they close at 9:30 tonight.

There are a couple of other places in Fayetteville, but this one's the only one you can reasonably get to that I know's open on Sunday night. Ask the desk clerk at your hotel; there might be something out in the Cedar Creek Road area, but I don't go out there so I don't know.

8. There are a couple of good ones in Wilson

which is exit 121. Bill's barbaque which off 264. Whatever you choose have fun.
