| Scenic train ride, a day trip from Asheville (or nearby) to Tennessee? |
|
Can somebody help me here? In the 1980's I took such a train ride with a group. It was when the leaves were changing, and lots of times the train went alongside a river. It was beautiful and I might like to do it again.

If operates two scheduled routes that originate in Bryson City, one to Nantahala and the other to Dillsboro, including site of the train wreck for the movie The Fugitive.
A peak, the colors are great. Remember that the leaves in these areas peak in a patchwork depending on tree varieties, elevation, orientation of slopes, and that year's weather. Since the routes go in opposite directions leaving Bryson City, their colors will peak a few days apart.
Anyone visiting that general area should see the Kilmer Forest and the Cherohola Skyway. If at all possible, stay 2-3 days at the Snowbird Mountain Lodge, within a mile or two of each site. Many details at their web site.
