They are talking about the area behind Pizza Hut & Sonic Board postpones decision on shopping center CABARRUS COUNTY The Harrisburg Planning and Zoning Board Monday postponed a decision that could bring a Wal-Mart and Lowe's Home Improvement stores to the town. Because the crowd of nearly 130 people exceeded the fire safety limit for the town hall's meeting room, the board moved the public hearing to Sept. 19 at a larger facility. The board was expected to decide on whether to approve a rezoning request that would allow Mount Airy-based Granite Development to rezone about 60 acres for retail development off N.C. 49 near Cedar Street. It's part of a proposed 455,000-square-foot shopping center on N.C. 49.

Hi, dad! I'm in Harrisburg as well. I'd hate to see a Wal-mart here. We have one in University and one in Concord. We don't need big boxes in Harrisburg!

The Wal-Mart in the University area should be flattened and rebuilt somewhere else. It's horiffic.

2. I've never understood... |

How firms like Wal-Mart, Lowe's and Home Depot could think they know what's best for smaller communities along the lines of re-zonings!
As a planner, I'm proud of you, DAD, for working hard to keep 'em out. You don't need the extra traffic, nor the extra infrastructure usage those places would bring. And Harrisburg's local stores SURE don't need them there!
If you need any advice on how to proceed, I'd be glad to help; just PM me!

Check out harrisburgfirst.org for latest on Wal-Mart. Possible big box moratorium coming. I'm thinking that perhaps we should be getting the Independent Tribune. The Observer never reported these developments.

There was an open meeting tonite on the project run by Granite Development. Since the developers were in charge of the meeting, it was all pro-big box. The people who did show up were pretty anti-big box when we were allowed to ask a few questions. The revealing part was that the developers did not know where Tom Query was. That's a big road that runs one freaking block parallel off of highway 49 ... they hadn't heard of it .. I can see they really care about our neighborhoods - not. The Wal-Mart people gave the impression that there would be no re-zoning necessary. I don't know, that's not what Ihad read before. What they had in mind was a 200,000+ sq ft Wal Mart and a 100,000 foot Lowe's really close to several neighborhood developments out here. They're going to give the new proposal to the city council, so the next meeting will be where the real action is.
