3. Not the Harris Y.
They distribute Focus on the Family there. Try the Jewish Community Center or the YWCA instead.

But I do agree, the library is excellent. You can browse their selections online and have the books, CD's, whatever, sent to the branch of your choice.

13. Boone/Blowing Rock very close...
I live in the foothills about an hour north of Charlotte. Boone and Blowing Rock are about 45 min. to an hour from me. When in Boone, eat at Macadoo's. You can get on the Parkway right at Boone on Hwy 321, lots of excellent hiking trails.

17. Mint Museum and etc.
If you are into the arts, Charlotte has a bit to offer. The Mint is a good small museum with decent shows. The Mint Craft Museum has some excellent shows and the McColl Center has stuff with a little more edge.

If you want to know about other local arts org. (say in Winston-Salem or Greensboro) just let me know. I'll point out some good spots.

18. Hey!
I'm a pretty new resident too - Definately join the library, the Main Library is beautiful; The Dowd YMCA is really convenient to Uptown & a little less conservative. Some other cool things to see are Lake Norman, Carowinds, & the Biltmore Estates out in Asheville. Borders carries guidebooks about Charlotte that can give a lot more info about things to do. And watch the road signs! The roads in Charlotte change names randomly & it can be pretty confusing for a newcomer. (I kept a Charlotte map with me the first three months). Hope you like the city!

19. Check out South End and NoDa.
There's a stretch of South Blvd just South of downtown that is just very cool. It used to be an industrial area but it's all been rebuilt/refurbished/re-whatevered in the past few years. There are plenty of restaurants, art galleries, etc. A very neat area, and also one of the more walkable places in Charlotte in my opinion. Take I-77 in to town, swing onto the John Belk freeway and then get on South blvd and you'll be right there in the thick of it.

Also NoDa (North Davidson) is a similar area on the other side of downtown. I think it's possible to hop on to Davidson St northbound off of the inner belt (making it convenient for you) and then just drive a couple miles. This is a very artsy area, more nitty-gritty and counterculture than South End though.

The Mint Museum was mentioned earlier. Also if you are into the arts there's the Charlotte Symphony which I recommend.
