Easley's veto of teacher out-of-state standards bill
Could someone please explain the rationale of this from Easley's point of view? What the hell was he thinking? Everything I've read in the newspaper regarding this is critical of Easley, and I have to agree. What reason would he have for doing this?

1. Do you REALLY want to ease the requirements?
If you want to attract more teachers, you PAY them more...not lower the bar.

Oh, and I think that a salary of $425,000 for President of UNC is way out of line, no matter what side of the political spectrum they come from.

I read that most states have higher requirement than NC anyway. Plus since we have a shortage of teachers anyhow, and we pay below average, how the fuck are we supposed to get all these teachers to move down here??

3. I am one of those out of state teachers
First, let me list the actual requirements being considered here. One, is having a passing exam on the pedadogy and the subject section of the Praxis exam. It is actually graded as a pair for this purpose. Second, we have to follow the steps of the initial licence. That is one meeting of an hour and a half each once a month for ten months. We have to do that for three years. We are also assigned a mentor.

The meetings are close to worthless. The mentor, at least in my case, is good. The big down side for me is the huge delay in granting tenure. I am frozen economically until I get tenure. I also have to stay deep in the closet until I can get tenure. Thus I would have liked Easley letting the bill pass.

I will admit though that the bill may have gone a little far.
