I either stream AAR on my computer at work or listen to it on XM in my car. I wish we could get an AAR station here in Charlotte.

My ex listened to it in the morning - he said just for the local news - but I couldn't stand even the morning hosts - when Katrina happened and gas prices were up I remember turning on WBT one morning and Stacie Lewis or whatever her name was said "I don't know anybody who has changed their driving habits because of the high gas prices." At this same time in this same community almost everyone I knew both Democrat and Republican and rich and poor were changing their drving habits because of gas prices. Haven't turned it on since.

al got his ass handed to him this morning. He was interviewing a Republican legal reporter about Alito, didn't catch his name, but every opinion Al Gardner spouted, this guy shot him down. Gardner was defending Alito and the reporter was saying how much of a conservative hack that Alito is and that true conservatives should vote against him. Al was sputering by the end of the interview.

6. why no Air America Radio? |
|
Asheville has an Air America station, why not Charlotte? I know the ratio of progressives in Asheville is probably a lot higher than in Charlotte, but if you look at absolute numbers I'm sure there's more progressives here than in Asheville.

And the scarcity of any "good" AM frequencies.
WBT makes money on its present format, so why change? Some viable AM's are owned by religious outlets and the possibility of them changing or selling is remote so those good frequencies are tied up. If AAR makes more money than sports radio or spanish language then maybe there's an outlet. If ABC sells all its radio interests, including Radio Disney then maybe the present WGFY could switch to AAR and give a reasonable coverage over the Charlotte city but not over the whole metro area (WGFY is still a marginal signal compared to WBT or even the FM's). Bear in mind that even WBT have had reception problems to part of their area (the SW) so when the chance to get an FM came available, they got it.
The Triad's a worse situation. The #1 station needs two frequencies to cover the area. The only viable frequency that can cover the entire Piedmont Triad on AM is 830 and it's religious. Sure there are smatterings of AM stations in the rural areas but they can make more money doing pay-for-preach and pay-for-play bluegrass and southern gospel. AAR would not pay in say, Mount Airy by switching WPAQ or WSYD to the liberal format. It wouldn't work.
But there is a way to get the liberal message in. A lot of these rural stations will do pay-for-preach. We just need a bible thumping Liberal Reverend who has that nice southern accent, who can sing a bit and get a nice message going in between some good ol' southern gospel. Buy some airtime, produce the shows, get the stations to play these shows and hey... our message is getting out there!
Mark.

8. Hey that preacher idea is slicker than beets! |

I never thought of that! Get somebody to "look" the part, cheap suit, combover hairdo, etc. throw in a few gospel songs and have the guy preach against the neo-cons!
I LOVE it! :bounce:

The rector at my Episcopal church here in Charlotte is from Raleigh, went to college in TN. and has roots in the south that go back 200 years, plus he is a great liberal. Maybe I can talk him into it.
