Last night, I heard airplanes. |
|
I originally posted this in another thread. I wanted to add it to my journal, but had personal information that I needed to edit out before I did so. This post was started at 05:00am, March 17, 2006.
I know what was done in my name in iraq today(3/16/06). Every 20 minutes or so, I drift off to sleep, and then I hear the plane again. It's not commercial- I know that there's nothing coming in for an hour. Nothing taking off for 1/2 hr. And yet it's been going on all night.
I don't want to put this in my journal- it may not be meant for public consumption. note Why not? Anyone else in my apartment complex heard it too. It's not like it was a secret or anything. I'm just tired and cranky. And here comes another plane. First there's the buzzing. Then, it gets louder and louder until it peaks. Then it gets softer, as they head back from a long day's mission.
My cats are antsy also- it's not just me. They usually sleep right through the night- as do I, snug as a bug on prescription sleeping meds.
I want to cry. No, seriously. Please tell me that it's just an exercise that's been going on all night. Otherwise- oh, hell. My conscience hurts.
Am I hearing the "victory dance" of our latest operation of killing?
It's almost light here. I almost don't want to know if they're civilian planes or not. I think I already know the answer.
on edit: Here comes another one. I think it's time to put headphones on and listen to some calming music.

1. I remember standing in my backyard and hearing airplanes |
|
night after night in the run up to the Iraq war. Not commercial airplanes, which I rarely noticed, but transport sounding planes with propellers. I remember looking up, with tears running down my face, knowing what they were, praying that it would be ok.
I dunno, maybe I was mistaken about those planes, but it seemed pretty clear to me at the time that they were military and that I was observing a historic moment from my cozy backyard. I got my husband once and we both stood out there looking and listening for a long time. Neither of us really believed that it would be ok.

2. That's exactly how it fel last night for me. |

I'm far (relatively) from the military areas here in Chapel Hill...yet, it was a smack in the face that the military areas of north carolina aren't far from me- either emotionally, or physically. I know vets, seen amputees from this awful war... it was just one more reminder that I couldn't sleep tight and know that I was safe and my government would do what was best; neither here nor abroad. What an awful couple of hours.
