do you get AAR in Winston-Salem, i've built some serious AM antennas here

in West Tennessee to get it in 100 miles from Memphis.. i built a 10" ferrite bar antenna boosted by a 4' tuned loop antenna, plus about 280' of #14 antenna wire, it comes in pretty good now, sun ut to sun down. it got me into building radios.. i have learned a lot..thanks AAR

2. on a clear night I can get WCKY in Cinci. Ohio

I'm in Winston-Salem and I've got one of these (with no extra antenna)...

It kinda fades in and out. Sometimes I can get the AAR Buffalo station. Only at night though. The Chapel Hill station isn't strong enough to reach this far west.

6. Round here the best bet is XM I'm afraid.

The ground is awful for conductivity around here. That station you listen to in Memphis is 10kw day, 5kw night. And it's on a low number AM channel. The two AAR affiliates in NC are 5kw day, and in the case of WCHL 1kw night (WPEK is daytimer only).

I'm afraid for AM AAR in NC you're having to rely on that cleared-channel station WCKY who has that good signal on 1530am. Sometimes it hurts to buckle down and pay that $13+ a month to XM but at least I don't hear any snap-crackle-and-pop (or for that matter any Rush Limpballs) coming in over the top. Oh, if Mike's having an off night I can always flip over to the Beeb.

PS with a set up like that you're probably more likely to get BBC Radio 4 longwave on 198 khz from the UK. I had a freak night one night when I got it on my unmodified UK set that I have here.

7. have you heard of Ground Antennas.. they are actually buried under the

ground. they are supposed to work magically well, however it seems that there is some problem with a rotating reception area relative to the location of the Moon or the time of year.. like you only get a certain part of the earth at any given time and it moves around in a circular pattern, my computer crashed and i have the back up disk somewhere.. there seems to be some mechanism under ground that works better than atmospheric transmission or so it said. i didn't get a chance to study it in depth, but it sounded interesting.

it is amazing what you can do with enough wire tho..

i make Crystal Radio Reproductions, i have put together the parts to make an 'Oceanic Shortwave Set'..that is a serious project i will need some expensive vernier dials, or maybe just some knobs about 3 feet in diameter..:think:

i make variometers that can cancel out an overlapping more powerful nearby station..'flame thrower'

there is no social interaction around here in the Tribal Bible Thumping Belt.. i try to keep busy.
