Relocated from Pittsburgh, 13 yrs. ago, and I still haven't gotten used to it. Now Pittsburgh isn't the cultural hub that NYC is, but there were always exciting things to do. Although, I'm not personally familiar with the Asheville area, I have friends who grew up there, and it sounds as if Asheville is one of the more progressive cities in this state.

Chapel Hill/Carrboro and Asheville are the best cities for progressives in NC.
Asheville has the advantage of having gorgeous weather in the summer and tolerable winters, certainly for those from most of NY.
I think you're going to love it!
