Just wanted to post a few things from my neck of the woods... northwestern NC. Locally, Democrats swept our county commissioners races, which means that now there isn't a single Republican on the commission! LOL. And that's here in supposedly deep red District 5. Statewide, Democrats increased their majorities in both the House and Senate. We now have a 12-seat advantage in the state Senate and 16-seat advantage in the state House. NC is now surrounded by states that have "Marriage Protection Amendments" (yuck) but I don't think we have to worry about that coming up in our state houses! Both of my state representatives are now Democrats, as both Repub incumbents lost (one in the primary, and one in the election). Even better, even though Madame Foxx was re-elected to the US House, she lost right here in her home county, Watauga! I think that's hilarious! Things are definitely looking up around here!

1. OT, but I love Watauga County! |
|
I lived across the border in Johnson County, TN for 8 years and did all my shopping for everything in Boone. The politics are like night and day between Boone and Mountain City. It's weird that 25 miles could make such a difference. Now living in Durham County which is progressive part of the state.

Mountain City is like a different world! Some of the folks I work with live there, and of course you can't generalize about an entire town, but the whole atmosphere is just different over there! Watauga now has 5 Democratic county commissioners, the first time the Dems have controlled the entire commission in a long time (I can't ever remember it happening)! So things are looking up around here.

3. we swept Chatham County too |
|
What we were up against were DINOs, because Chatham has historically been a one party county. After December, all five commissioners will be progressive Democrats.
What is ironic is that progressive politics here has received a boost from northeastern Republicans who have moved here. Once they arrive they have trouble connecting to the native Republicans, so they quickly start voting for Democrats- at least on the local and state level.
