Non-political plea for "help" from fellow Raleigh-Durham DUers |
|
Can anyone recommend plumbers? Even ex-felon friends...LOL.
I have a water main break between the meter and the house, so it's not covered under warranty nor home insurance. It's going to cost a fortune, which I absolutely don't have, through a licensed plumber. I'd try to get help doing the digging, since that's the most labor-intensive aspect (or one of them). Also, if you know any plumbers/companies who would accept half up front and I could make monthly payments perhaps?
I filed bankruptcy one year ago, so applying for increased home equity loan and that kind of thing is out of the question.
Thanks for any suggestions.

You need to contact OWASA (Orange Water and Sewer Authority) and talk to their customer service group. They have a program with the InterFaith Council (IFC) to provide financial assistance in cases of need. OWASA also can spread payments and may be able to suggest other things you can do. But most importantly, make sure you stop the leak immediately, probably by turning off the water at the street.
The repair work needs to be done properly to avoid backwash into the overall system.
If your water is not through OWASA, there is probably a parallel set of contacts.
Also contact Orange County Social Services. They might be able to help with emergency/contingency funds or be able to refer you to private, faith-based, or community resources. Orange County has a lot of possibilities in these areas. Some of the people who volunteer through these organizations or their church are licensed and might be able to help in your case.
Private mail me through DU with a little more info on your situation, location, etc. and I will work my backchannel contacts while you try the front doors. There should be some help around here somewhere in Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Hillsboro.
