I think we are a same-day voter registration state now.

Wow! From a Democracy NC email update I received:

Same-Day Registration has passed the NC General Assembly! The final version of the bill was approved in the NC House by a 69-47 margin and the NC Senate by 35-15. Governor Mike Easley has indicated that he will sign the bill into law soon. This would make NC the 9th state in the nation to have Same-Day Registration.

This means that unregistered voters will be able to register AND vote on the same day during the early voting period. There are checks in place to be certain that the individual is really eligible to vote. If they are not, their ballot is withdrawn, so there is little likelihood of fraud.

I am excited! This is a great opportunity to turn out highly mobile voters who are difficult to find for voting, even if you did manage to register them in the first place. :)
