Thune victory = Conrad's obituary?

I hate to say it, but our friends down in South Dakota just put the lie to the idea that up here we're all smart enough to vote for people in Congress who bring home the bacon.

Conrad voted against the war, and is a constant critic of the Bush Administration. I think I would just about lay down my life to get him re-elected at this point.

But that vote against the war will either seen terribly prophetic or as pro-terror two years from now, depending on how things go on the ground.

All the GOP need is a decent candidate, and I don't think the GOP is going to give Sand or Liffrig the time of day, especially Sand.

1. NO! Conrad is extremely popular in North Dakota.

He has a long history of helping the State. He is a fiscal conservative and anti-partial Birth Abortion.

He is one of my FAVORITE Senators. I email him with many of my concerns.

I hope that he does not loose.

2. Also, Daschle was an ass kisser to Bush since day 1.

Conrad has never been one and North Dakotans don't seem to mind his independent streak. Afterall, ND does not have Capital Punishment.

5. I no longer live in ND (for now)

but I would give money or do what I could to keep Conrad in office. As much as people dislike Daschle (I am pretty neutral on him), he was a democrat and Thune can only be worse.

I say, "for now" because with *'s reelection, my husband wants out of the army NOW. There are ways without going awol, or there are ways to stay in the army and NOT get sent to fight this illegal war (becoming a dreaded recruiter, for one). ND would be high on our list of places to move. I don't care if it is a red state. It is my home, people are friendly, and there are so many other reasons I like it there.

6. Conrad is better than Daschle. Is Conrad in any real threat in 2006?

8. The only person I see with a shot of unseating Conrad...

is former Governor Schaffer, who is (not by me, but by most) fairly well respected in this state.

There's no one else that the Republican base can truly rally around. What are they gonna do, run Sand...again? Throw Liffrig back out there? They would need Schaffer, that's their only chance that I see.

I don't want to justify Thune's win or anything (I know the RNC burned a ridiculous amount of $$$ there to keep him in the hunt) but Thune was considered to be a solid individual back during his days in Congress for that state. They didn't just drag someone out of the street, a la Liffrig. If Schaffer don't run, Conrad's fine.....if he does, we should all be ready to throw down and fight for him, because it'll be tough.

7. How long before they start to turn the screws?

How long before Minot A.F.B or Grand Forks A.F.B shows up at the top of the base closing list? How long before I they start to cut off our farmers?

The only way they can get their ultimate goal of a one-party state is to start to make it a Bad Thing to have representatives of the "wrong" party.

9. The ND Rethugs have no Thune.

The Repubs will have to take down Pomeroy before taking on the big dogs.

Conrad and Dorgan work much better with state GOP'ers than did Daschle.

10. Outside money

took down Daschle. He won reelection by a good margin the first time. It was only the months and months of negative campaigning with cheap ad time from outside sources that they were narrowly able to take Daschle out.

I do not see that push to unseat Conrad (or Dorgan, and even bigger target) right now by the GOP.
