How do Kent Conrad and Byron Dorgan keep winning by such large.... |
|
margins?
North Dakota is a true red state (60%), yet your Senators keep on getting re-elected by HUGE margins. In 2000, Conrad got more votes than Bush, and Dorgon got more votes than Bush in 2004.
What is it that they do? We need their help in reaching out to rural voters.
Please respond.

North Dakota is a populist state with very conservative religious values.

Populists who bring home the bacon, give pretty good constituent service and mirror their state. They're also both known to be pretty good guys. That state is lucky.

5. Could you please go into more detail on everything you just said? |
|
"Pretty Good Guys"? "Mirror their State"?
I always saw them as being Moderate to Liberal.

10. the editor of the LaMoure Chronicle |
|
wrote an opinion column the other week (weekly paper) claiming ND was the most socialist state in the country and trying to figure out why NDakotans vote Republican for president and state legislature.
I don't know about the god part. Most of the people I knew were Lutherans and pretty liberal or "I don't care either way" on the abortion issue and such. I knew more people that were anti-big government. I speak on the religious part as compared to other states I've lived in in the past 8 years: KENTUCKY, VIRGINIA, COLORADO. Compared to those, ND is not religious.

Well, there are not all party-line voters out there.
KFGO and Clear Channel's News and Views with Ed Schultz does alot to keep the relevent issues, at least on the national level in focus for Dorgan et al.
Ed's book is also pretty good by the way.

9. the Republicans haven't been able to come up with any good candidates |
|
The guy that ran against Dorgan this year (Liffrig) was a joke, and the republicans knew it, and the guy that ran against Representative Pomeroy didn't run much of a campaign either. The republicans haven't found good candidates to run against these guys. If former governor Schaefer or current governor Hoevan ran for Senate, then there might be a close race.
Here's an example of how bad Liffrig's campaign was. Liffrig made a big deal of the gay marriage issue, and he tried to paint Dorgan as a liberal who supported it. Of the voters who thought that gay marriage was the most important issue, a majority voted for Dorgan.

14. They represent North Dakota, not the DNC, in the Senate. |
|
Of course, they will still vote with the DNC most of the time.
They have close working relationships with a lot of Republican leaders in local communities, and have kept the AF bases open against all odds.
The Republicans have also had a pathetic bench there for years.
