Just got my Voter Registration card

Interesting... the card states that voter identification is now required at the polls. I wasn't aware of that change... anyone else receive a card with this information?

yeah, the rules are now different.

If you voted dem during the primary, you must furnish :

- 2 picture IDs, besides your driver's license

- 1 major credit card

- a drop of blood for DNA evidence

- mother's grandmother's maiden name for geneological verification

- all 727 digits of your social security number

- the astronomical co-ordinates of all major & minor stars in the Celestial Sphere at the time of your birth

to prove that you are, who you claim to be, to vote.

I figured I could work at the polls and represent us Dems.

I worked the Primary and am working this Friday at a special election to pick our candidate for OH-3 (since Stephanie Studebaker dropped out). I'll also work the General election in November and represent our best interests.

I went 15 minutes later and they didn't ask for mine. We are both dems.

21. Sounds like the poll workers were to blame.

I worked the polls today for a special (Dem only) election in OH-03 and ID was required of every voter.

We lost two people who came without ID and refused to fill out the paperwork for a provisional ballot. Sad, because both people were in our registered-voter book.

One woman said she'd voted in the same precinct for 18 years, refused to return home for ID, and was insulted that we asked her to prove who she was; she said the first time she voted she cast her vote for Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The good news is that we had two people come in only to switch parties from Repug to Dem. Both said they were disgusted with the current administration and didn't want to be associated with them.

Hopefully, that's a sign of things to come.

2. I don't have my card yet

but that law was enacted sometime around the last election. This is the first election that ID will be required. Part of the 'voter suppression' act I believe! Life in Ohio gets darker and darker.

3. ID required

This was part of the HB 3 crap that the General Assembly passed to 'combat voting fraud,' despite the fact that there was absolutely no proof that Ohioans have been pretending to be someone else when voting. Basically, it is part of the Republican vote suppression effort, since it is much more likely that lower income voters will show up at the polls without ID, and are most likely to be discouraged from coming back with ID or casting a provisional ballot.

Here's what the SOS website says:

"Will I need an ID to Vote?
Yes. Every voter will be required to provide proof of identity before voting. (Note: You cannot use as proof of identification a notice that the board of elections mailed to you.) If you do not have, or fail or refuse to provide, the required proof of identity, you may cast a provisional ballot."

Your current Ohio drivers license will work for a valid photo identification card. I guess they failed to mention that fact just to add to the confusion.

7. You remind me I need to call Voter Reg in Warren Co.

to make sure that they will be sending me an absentee/overseas ballot. I was a little hesitant to check off the box that gave my party affiliation. Figured with the track record of Warren Co, they would round file it when it came in the mail.

I'll be voting straight Dem to expunge the slime in OH this fall.

8. South & Young families in warren county

in Warren county, the South & Young families decide what is good for everyone.

That includes the city safety director colluding with a Board Of Elections chair
to count ballots behind closed doors...remember the night of November 2nd 2004.

Apparently former BOE director Pat South is now a county commissioner.

Look up and down the list of county officials, it is either a South or a Young
or someone linked to them somehow.

22. My overseas ballot will go out on 10/3

I called to make sure they recvd. all my registration materials. Don't trust the slimeballs in Warren Co. Lockdown my ass in 2004. Someday we'll find out what they were really doing behind those locked doors.

Your talking about your voter registration card. Just be safe and bring your Ohio drivers License with you. You still need to prove with a photograph who you are.
Just be safe so you don't end up getting pissed off and kicking someone's ass.

...that explains the rules change and what is now needed at the polls. It's a very large card as postcards go. Must be one per household because mine still hasn't arrived yet, not that I really care.

I didn't think voter ID cards were acceptable as proof of residence.

13. You're right, AOD, it's the big "polling place" postcard

I did refer to it incorrectly as a Voter Registration Card.

Of course the postcard states that the actual postcard will not serve as proof of identity at the polls.

14. I'm not referring to the post card.

What I'm talking about is a small card that shows your precinct/ward number, and I believe also the name of your polling place. It's about the size of a credit card. It's issued by the county elections board. I carry mine in my wallet, although I've never been asked to present it. I believe I received it after I moved to Washington Twp. in 1997. It was the first such card I'd ever gotten, and I've been voting since 1980.

I believe it's only issued the first time one first registers to vote in a new precinct.

At my place of employment, we accept that Voter Registration Card + Driving License as proof of citzenship, for example.

What I received in the mail was not my initial Voter Registration Card, but it was the same size, and looked a lot like my initial mailing.

17. I got a little card thingy in the mail, too

It's very cleverly done "ID REQUIREMENTS" on the front, and the back "Voters will need DL..." and it goes all the way down the list, apparently you can still vote provisionally without it, but I suspect the point is for people who can't or won't produce a DL to stop reading and throw it away and to "Well, I guess I can't."

I don't remember ever getting a card like that before, either. And this after we threw a fit last time because they KEPT asking us for ID and eventually we got a callback and were told it was a data entry error and next time we wouldn't have to produce them. Until they changed the rules, I guess. Nice.

18. HB3 - Voter Identification

I think it's crazy - especially the contradicting answers that I have received and the unclear language on the SOS website and in SOS materials...

It says current and valid ID lists the types and later says with current address... so is this the last type of acceptable ID in the list that has to have CURRENT ADDRESS or is it all "acceptable" forms of ID? either way - this is going to be a nightmare IMHO.

Encourage voters to vote absentee.

One woman said she'd been voting at the same precinct for 18 years and had cast her first ballot ever for FDR. She left without voting.

The good news: two people came in to change their party affiliation from Repug to Dem. Both admitted they'd been life-long Repugs but had had enough of the current administration.

We can only hope that many more Buckeyes feel the same.

24. What kind of paperwork do affiliation-switchers have to fill out?

Is it a difficult process? Are they permitted to cast a regular ballot after switching parties, or only a provisional one?

25. It's easy to change parties

and requires filling out a "Statement of Persons Challenged as to Party Affiliation - Form 10-X" big words, small card to complete.

And, yes, they are permitted to cast a regular ballot after switching parties.

The challenge only occurs in a PARTISAN Primary Election; in a General Election there is no statement of party affiliation.
