A sad turn of events for Dayton-area Democrats isn't necessarily turning out so sad, at least for the party. Faced with the need to come up with a last-minute congressional candidate to take on incumbent Rep. Mike Turner, they have a volunteer they didn't have earlier in the year.
Last spring, Stephanie Studebaker — a newcomer to the political scene — won the party's primary. Then she ran into personal problems and withdrew.
Federal prosecutor Dick Chema says he didn't think about running last winter — when other candidates were making their plans. But when the late Democratic vacancy occurred, he felt that somebody ought to pose a challenge to Rep. Turner. He quit his job to do it.
He labels Rep. Turner as a "rubber-stamp" of President George W. Bush. He says he sees change coming in the country (meaning a Democratic takeover of the U.S. House of Representatives) and says the 3rd District should position itself to be with the majority party.
That pitch suggests that perhaps one factor in his decision not to run last winter, but to do so now, is that the national political atmosphere has moved in a direction the Democrats like.
But Mr. Chema has been eager to run for something for a long time. As Montgomery County Democratic Chairman Dennis Lieberman says of him, "Politics is in his blood.<snip>
