So I'm sitting at my job this evening and I overhear a conversation.
Person #1: You ARE going to vote in Tuesday's primary, right? Person #2: Well, uh, I.... Person #1: You DO know, don't you, that if you DON'T vote in Tuesday's primary you CAN'T vote in November? Person #2: Well, uh, I...
By this time I am virtually standing up in my chair, waving my arms, and yelling.
Person #1: Yeah. That's right. I'm not even sure how a primary works -- it's about picking a president or something, but you have to vote in it.
I virtually butt into the conversation to set everybody straight with a 30-second civics lesson.
Later, I asked Person #1 just where in the world she got that cockeyed notion. From her mother, who is a teacher, who heard it from her principal. So of course it must be true.
Jeezus. No wonder kids suck at citizenship.
Cautionary tale, though. Be aware for such blatant misinformation this campaign year, and don't hesitate to step in and set the record straight. Remember all the crap Blackwell put out in 2004 to discourage people from voting. At first I thought it was something like that (the person being addressed was from a low-income group), but I soon enough figured out it was sheer ignorance talking, rather than malice.

5. Didn't that just happen somewhere? |

In Florida? People were told that if they couldn't vote on Tuesday polls would be open on Wednesday?
I think in Virginia people got the primary date mixed up too. I'm glad that all TV ads here are making it clear that the primary is Tuesday.
Hopefully this year we won't put up with the bullshit Blackwell pulled. I tend to think we won't.

And true, we should be encouraging people to vote in the primary, but with the people with whom I work (homeless) it may not be possible for them to do so given what they have to do on that day. Some necessary apppointments can take up an entire day.
Just this week I had a conversation with a guy who says he never votes in primaries or in unconstested elections, but will vote in the general election. At least he votes.
Now **I** need a civics lesson: The person to whom my coworker was talking then asked if her son, who turns 18 in early November (just before election day) could vote. I told her no, because registration closes in like October. But...if he would produce a birth certificate at the polls that shows he is of voting age, could he get a provisional ballot?
