1. That was a tough call

Do I vote for Schoenbrunn Village? Can't do that. I'm currently disillusioned with David Zeisberger. He was not the friend of Native Americans as he is portrayed.

How about Zoar Village? My husband is a descendant, but I don't really like anything about Zoar since the Rathskeller in the Hotel shut down.

Fort Laurens? No, that's just a jumping off point for the $2million dollar bridge over I-77. That's a reminder of my former Cong. Ney.

The Custer Monument! It was fun to go there when I was a kid. No, I'm sure Custer came back as Geo. Bush.

Ah, the Armstrong Museum. I love the infinity room! No, too recent. I want to go further back.

My final decision is............the Miamisburg Mound. That is one impressive pile of dirt.

I love Ohio history and want every site to prosper.

But Newark is likely to become a World Heritage site, along with Serpent Mound. The centerpoint of Serpent Mound Oval Mound is one degree (cir/360) west of Newark's Great Circle centerpoint!!

2. Hanby House

What a fun poll! I've lived in Ohio my whole life and there were many sites that I didn't know (but will now research).

I voted for Hanby House in Westerville. I grew up right down the street-- truly down the street, walk out of my parent's house, turn left, and walk about 3/4 of a mile. I even won a Hanby writing award in elementary school. For anyone who doesn't know, Benjamin Hanby wrote "My Darling Nelly Gray" and the Christmas song "Up on the House Top". His house is kept historically accurate to the 1800s. Really brings back happy childhood memories to think about it. :)

5. I will put a plug in for The Oberlin Heritage Center in Oberlin of northeast Ohio

just for making the most of what they have. Director Pat Murphy has gotten more awards for Oberlin during her tenure than Oberlin has had for its entire existence. Oberlin was Station #99 on the Underground Railroad. Oberlin College was the first to admit blacks and women to its ranks.

The Wayne County Historical Society as an organization, the main campus of which is located in Wooster, has my vote for the most potential. They have a well-meaning board; they just need to get some professional leadership. This historical society can boast the services of two famous Abraham Lincoln portrayer/presenters, Pete Raymond, whose likeness has appeared on the cover of a recent book (which I can't remember the name of at the moment) and Gerald Payne, who often appears on the the square for community events. The Lincoln Highway runs through Wooster as well. In general, Wooster has a rich history founded on diverse political, industrial, agricultural, small business and philanthropic activists.

7. I grew up near Newark

and I loved going to the circle mound, in Heath.

They've closed the museum there, last I heard. Ohio friggin sucks when it comes to running historical sites.

8. The science and nature centers are much better, I agree, unfortunately

since I have a master's in history. It's unfortunate that the Historical Societies cannot get their acts together, but I think there proprietors tend to be the territorial types, so what to do. I actually now spend more time outdoors and searching new nature preserves in Ohio than studying history, so I have "let go" of it. Except I emailed a director, that I know, of one of the historical societies I have been involved in, to tell her I had nominated her facility complex, and I didn't even get a response. I thought that was weird at best.
