John Boccieri was assessed nearly $1.4 million in unpaid state taxes, interest and fees in 2006 — a finding he vigorously challenged but eventually agreed to pay.
According to an Associated Press review of public documents, Republican Jim Renacci (rihn-AY-see) and his wife Tina filed adjusted gross income in 2000 of negative $247,000. A state audit completed in 2006 calculated it at $13.7 million. They were assessed $954,650 in unpaid taxes, $146,938 in interest, and a $293,876 penalty.
Renacci appealed the entire assessment. He believed he had properly followed state tax law when not declaring $14 million held in trust. A message seeking further comment was left with his campaign spokesman Tuesday.
