McAlester - A man convicted in the 1987 murder of a pregnant Cleveland County woman is scheduled to be put to death by lethal injection Tuesday night at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester.
Frank Duane Welch was handed a death sentence in 1998, more than eleven years after the murder of 28-year-old Jo Talley Cooper, who was three months pregnant when she was tied up, molested and strangled while her infant son slept in the next room.
Cooper's murder went unsolved for nearly ten years before DNA in the case pointed to Welch, who was in prison for the attempted kidnapping and assault of a woman in a Wal-Mart parking lot in 1997.
KTUL...I know a lot of people are against the death penalty, and it's certainly worthy of discussion. It's hard to get too worked up over a monster like this, though.
