WASHINGTON -- Sen. Jim Inhofe persuaded a Washington- based group backing Tom Coburn in the U.S. Senate race not to run a television ad criticizing Kirk Humphreys, who is opposing Coburn for the Republican nomination.
Inhofe, R-Tulsa, said he told Stephen Moore, the president of Club for Growth, that Coburn and Humphreys were "two conservative candidates, two honest candidates" who were running positive campaigns.
Inhofe, who is supporting Humphreys, told Moore that the ad produced by Club for Growth was inaccurate because it accused Humphreys of taking money from casino interests.
Club for Growth, which had sent Oklahoma television stations the ad criticizing Humphreys and bought $175,000 worth of advertising time to air it, agreed to recall the ad, Moore said.
