Oregon’s primary election Tuesday has few hotly contested races for state offices, but it’s drawing plenty of attention from heavy hitters who are focused on the fall presidential battle.
Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry will conduct campaign events today and Tuesday in Portland with former rival Howard Dean just as Oregon voters are finishing their mail ballots.
The day after the election, first lady Laura Bush will travel to Oregon to tout President Bush’s “No Child Left Behind” school policies. She no doubt also will try to sow some good will for her husband among Oregon voters while she is here.
There is little suspense surrounding Oregon’s late-in-the-game presidential primary. Bush and Kerry backers nonetheless view it as an important kickoff for the fall campaign in a key battleground state.
