I was unwilling to compromise on these issues. Government should never lose sight of helping those who are most in need, and it would have been morally indefensible to extract budget savings at the expense of the poor. Thankfully, a majority of my colleagues in the Senate realized this logic, and we were able to pass a deficit-reduction bill that protected our poor, elderly and disabled from senseless cuts.
