Saturday falls on the 1st of April - time to get to it!

Our only requirements are outside covered tables, easy access from Public transportation and tasty brews.

1. Lucky Lab on Hawthorne has been the best place so far, IMHO

It's got darts and such. It's a Brit-pub model.

Didn't someone mention wanting to try someplace downtown? I vaguely remember discussing the idea that we should try new places/neighborhoods each time.

I just heard Lucky Lab opened a new place in NW @19th and Quimby. I don't know whether or not it has outdoor seating but it might be fun to try the new place.

10. I can't go, and won't be able to for, well, a long time.

But if ya'll haven't been to the Moon and Sixpence (outdoor patio on a nice day), you haven't been to Portland yet.

Also, I keep hearing great things about Roots Brewing. Oh, and Amnesia Brewing on Mississippi is wonderful, too, with covered outdoor seating.

12. Another suggestion

on the westside there is the Raccoon Lodge on the Beaverton-Hillsdale Hwy (near Raleigh Hills Fred Meyer) they have outdoor seating, are on a major bus line and there is a parking lot!

Clark.... was a tavern owner, not a political heavyweight. He hadn't run for office since his campaign for sophomore class president at Lincoln High School in 1947. The bearded barkeep was chiefly known outside his Goose Hollow neighborhood for flashing a statue in a controversial "Expose Yourself to Art" poster. His idea of dressing up meant dusting off the lederhosen. His favorite mode of transit was bicycle or canoe. He was a foul-mouthed, 52-year-old ex-beatnik and "born-again pagan," a registered Republican who threatened to vote for Jesse Jackson.

In short, he was the consummate outsider. But while Clark's trail to the mayor's office was unlikely, it was no accident.

By 1983 Ivancie had so infuriated Portland's progressive political mafia that a handful of henchmen went looking for a challenger. "We wanted someone who was unconventional, had a history of community service and solid business sense," says veteran City Hall staffer Dave Kish.

"Ivancie took us as a joke," says Tim Hibbitts, Clark's pollster and campaign consultant. "We didn't want to give him reason to do anything otherwise." Hibbitts and Padrow proceeded to pull off Portland's first stealth campaign. Padrow, whom Clark paid in packs of Tarreytons, would "confide" in City Commissioner Mildred Schwab, telling her what a shambles the campaign was in, knowing that the news would reach Ivancie.

"It was basically a sandbag job," says Hibbitts. In reality, the campaign had rounded up nearly 400 volunteers who blanketed the city for Bud.

poster! Maybe I'll get to talk to Bud Clark in person! That would be fun.

We're kind of newcomers in Portland, and of course, lack the historical and political insight we would have had over the decades. (Ask us about the Boston, Massachusetts, political scene, 'though and we'll spout afresh.) Moved here in 1998, leaving Sudbury, Massachusetts, where we had lived for almost 30 years. My husband is from Brockton, Mass. and I was brought up in Miami, Florida. We followed a daughter and son-in-law to the west -- my doctor son-in-law worked for Intel for seven years, but is now with OHSU. Already had one son in Salt Lake City from 1990 and a couple of stepdaughters in the Seattle area. Out of five kids, four of them moved west...

So, we've been kind of forced to school ourselves in history, geography, and climatology in a new location. I was pretty homesick at first. I arrived here on April 4, 1998, with no car and no job, and stuck in a one-bedroom apartment my husband had rented the preceding December -- and had to experience one of the hottest summers on record. We built a new home with Legend and now live out to the west of Murray Boulevard. We're comfortable now and having a good time in retirement.

(My husband was working when we moved here as a contract software engineer; however, he got caught in the technology downsizing in 2001 and we were forced to retire early.)

We travel a lot and have two wonderful grandkids here, plus a lot of other people I know from volunteering at OPB and elsewhere.

Perhaps we'll be at the DU meet-up. I have hand surgery scheduled on Monday morning so not sure if we can make it.

25. Viva, I had both hands repaired in 1983. This is --

"stenosing tenosynovitis" or "trigger finger" -- I've had several of these operations, including one in 12/2004 with the same doctor.

I had no idea about Skinner! I did a search. all I could find is that he is either leaving for a few months to spend time with the family :) or that he is selling his part of DU and going to work for Salon. :shrug:

I had that condition about 8 years ago with my right thumb and remember it was extremely painful just trying to bend it. Best wishes for a good outcome.
