Which Dem will run for Darlene Hooley's Seat? |
Rumor has it she isn't seekeing re-election. Has anyone tossed their hat in the ring yet? Could it PLEASE be someone like Peter DeFazio or Earl Blumenhauer, and not some Dem in name only??

1. I've heard a serious (but unconfirmed) rumor that the party is asking Steve Novick |
which would solve a couple of problems at once. Although I'd prefer seeing Novick in Gordy's senate seat, this does make some sense to me, and Merkely isn't a complete tool AFAIK (and definitely has the party support to take on Smith, which Novick lacks)
If it's true (BIG if ) could be a win/win thing.

2. That would be the best! |
I am so torn between Novick and Merkley. He would be a fantastic replacement for Hooley and has such a dynamic story and personality that he would have a great chance at winning.

6. Why would Novick cash out of the senate primary when he's ahead? |
Last I heard, he was out front and Candy Neville was ahead of Merkely by a nose.
Merkely may be the establishment favorite, but he isn't polling too well just yet. Maybe Merkely should be the one dropping out to run for Hooley's seat?

9. Because the only congressional seat Merkley would be able to run for is... |
Peter Defazio's and I don't see Pete leaving anytime soon (nor do I want him to).

7. It's a tough district. You have to be a different kind of democrat to |
get elected in the 5th district; remember, Darlene won the seat in a nail-biter against fundy republican whacko Jim Bunn. Earl is terrific, but he has the advantage of a safe seat in Multnomah county.

10. I just heard today at the Senate Debate held at LBCC... |
That the 5th Congressional District now has more Democrats registered than Republicans. I forget how many years it has been sice this has happened. I wouldn't count on losing the seat just yet - even if crazy Maddox (R) is running for it.

12. I did mean Mannix... sorry. |
I know... I know... what you're saying, but the hard-core righties LOVE him. Mannix probably thinks his is an easy seat to pick up and a one-way ticket to Washington. I just hope we really do out number them this time.

13. Yes, but a lot of those valley dems (excluding Eugene folk) are kind of the "Reagan dem" types who |
tend to support fairly conservative candidates. All of the weirdly conservative dems in the legislature have come from the valley.
I think this district will always be in play.
