Just heard about the hate crime on the Hawthorne Bridge in Portland. Unacceptable.

This is so terrible. And I didn't realize until I read this article that fifty or so of these crimes (twenty related to sexual orientation) have taken place in the city this past year:

Awful. Especially the parts about bystanders doing nothing to help.

I've noticed a consistent 'not my business, not getting involved' attitude towards a lot of illegal behavior. It's usually benign--looking the other way around pot deals, etc., but I'm not really surprised that it extends to hate crimes, as disgusting as it is.
