Fifty people have been laid off by LTS Builders, about a quarter of its staff, and another 25 could follow, multiple sources have told the Pocono Record.
The layoffs come even though LTS, one of the area's largest developers, seems poised for a busy year.
LTS publicly reported record-breaking January 2007 sales, the highest in five years, as they simultaneously laid off longtime employees. Workers who were promised free health care as a new benefit starting last month swiftly moved from a sense of job security to the unemployment line.
LTS will continue its role as the driving force behind a number of large housing developments planned throughout the Poconos, said Bruce Weidenbaum, chief operating officer.
