Supporters of two Ben Avon sisters running an orphanage in Haiti secured permission to bring 150 Haitian children to Pittsburgh, former federal prosecutor Mary Beth Buchanan said this afternoon.
The only remaining hurdle is to clear government approval to land a plane in the earthquake-ravaged Caribbean island, Buchanan said.
"We have several planes; we just can't land them," Buchanan said. Several major airlines offered planes with capacity for at least 160 passengers. "We're waiting to have the ability to land."
Buchanan said supporters helped secure medical supplies and other items to deliver to the orphanage as soon as possible. She enlisted the help of Dr. Mary Carrasco of Pittsburgh Mercy Health System, who helps run a child advocacy program for Allegheny County.
County officials this morning said they are mobilizing workers and volunteers in preparation for the children's potential arrival.
