Great Protest Today At Corbett Speech in Reading |
|
There was a great protest this afternoon in Reading before Corbett's speech at the Albright College graduation. Reportedly, the faculty voted to not grant him an honorary degree. The protest featured persons opposed to his gas drilling policies and his public school and public college cuts. Some faculty members joined in the protest.

1. Good news. And I especially like the news about |
|
the vote not to grant him an honorary degree. Good choice.

2. Small, private religious college faculty/students protest Corbett? Great! |
|
Albright College is a sister college to Lebanon Valley College, where Corbett got his degree. Bopth colleges have the same religious affiliation, starting out as affiliated with the United Evangelical Church and merging to become Lutheran affiliated.
This school should have been a natural to support Corbett. He didn't screw over THEIR budgets by 50% or tell Albright, with its 118 acres that the school should welcome the frackers on to THEIR campus.
Three cheers for the faculty at this school! They stood up for principles of accessible education and the environment. Excellent example for their students.

Officially, Albright is affiliated with the United Methodist Church, but it is mainly run as a private non-denominational college.
Private colleges are seeing a 50% drop in the money they directly receive from PA. PHEAA for each student who gets a PHEAA grant. This is a decrease of around $350 per student, which is not as serious as the cuts to public colleges.

4. Noted. I got my Protestant denominations confused. |
|
I hadn't realized that of course the PHEAA cuts hurt students at private colleges as well.
