Sen. Jim DeMint's (SC) secret action against Hurricane Victims |
|
Sen. Jim DeMint, a South Carolina Republican, has stalled legislation that would help many people in New Orleans and along the hurricane ravaged Gulf Coast recover. Mr. DeMint has stalled legislation that would help by preventing some victims from having to use Road Home recovery grants to pay off Small Business Administration loans to repair their storm damage. This is not a duplication of benefits b/c the LOANS have to be repaid and many people need the loans as well as the grant money to rebuild and return to their homes. Sen. Demint tried to keep his opposition hidden by putting a secret hold on the bill. After a few days his cowardice was revealed. He says he is concerned about the cost, estimated at $215 million, which is just a little more than the daily cost of the Iraqi war. Supporters of this bill point out that the loans aren't being forgiven. Sending rebuilding aid back to the federal government instead of putting it to work here where it's needed so much, is just wrong! Please write and call Mr. DeMint and tell him to support those attempting to put their lives back together almost 2 years after this disaster.
