I don't remember seeing them at SC beaches as a child and young adult (1950's-1970's). But in recent years I've seen lots of them.
Have they made a spectacular comeback, or just come to SC in recent decades?

They were seriously endangered for a while due to the effects of DDT in the food chain. Now that DDT has been banned, the population has rebounded, at least in the southeast. Score one for the environmentalists! http://www.nwf.org/nationalwildlife/article.cfm?issueID=27&articleID=689edit for typo
