Charleston DU'ers: Where are some fun places to hang out? |
|
My wife and I are taking a weekender down there this Friday.
What's fun to do in Charleston?

1. I can recommend some eateries. |
|
Magnolia's, which is my personal fav, Anson's, Poogan's Porch. I think nightlife can be found on Vendue Range, but that may have changed. I love the market and carriage rides, but I'm old. Have fun!

through the historic district. The drivers/guides have all had to pass a rigorous written exam on the history and architecture of every single historic building in the district. I know cause one of my kids was a guide one summer. The old Slave Market (dating back to the 1700s I think) has been well preserved since its notorious days when thousands of slaves were sold there. Today you'll see black women weaving and selling the famous seagrass baskets; and there are dozens of booths with various arts, crafts and food products for sale.
If you go a little bit out of town, there are some beautiful plantations, although the guides there tend to sanitize the slavery aspect. Make SURE you have both mosquito repellant and something to take the sting out of bites, especially if you're out in the countryside. At night there are the haunted tours of Charleston. And when you're done with that, stop in for a drink at a waterfront tavern and enjoy some boiled peanuts with your drinks. They are boiled in sea water and absolutely addictive.

4. Oh shit! The mosquitos are bad?!? |

Mosquitos love me. My wife and I will go for a walk TOGETHER, and I'll get a dozen bites and she won't get anything.
Not that I'm complaining...Good for her...:grr:

You know the drill - spray the strong stuff (DEET) on your clothing and cover every square inch of exposed skin - like strips of skin between the straps of your sandals. When we walked along a garden path at one of the plantations, they just descended in droves - must have been 20 of them each on our backs. They weren't too bad in town.
